Councilwoman Melanie Elder is a dedicated public servant and community leader who has served on City Council since January 1, 2020. Melanie has been a champion for the people. She is a strong advocate for improving public safety, enhancing economic opportunities, and promoting sustainable development in the city. 

On January 22, 2023, Melanie received the Harold F. Holtz Municipal Training Institute Certificate of Recognition. The Harold F. Holtz Municipal Training Institute is a cooperative effort of the Georgia Municipal Association (GMA) and the University of Georgia’s Carl Vinson Institute of Government which provides a nationally recognized series of training opportunities for city officials. To receive a Certificate of Recognition, a city official must complete a minimum of 42 units of credit, including at least 18 hours from a list of required classes. The training program consists of more than 70 courses. Her pursuits to continuous education through GMA are a testament to her dedication to public service.

Melanie obtained her Bachelor of Science in Political Science from Albany State University and later received her MBA from Louisiana State University- Shreveport. She also obtained a Paralegal Certificate from Emory University’s Center for Lifelong Learning. 

Melanie has a strong background in corporate and non-profit job roles. She currently serves in a leadership capacity with State Farm Insurance Companies. 

Melanie is also actively involved within her church, she serves as Vice President of the Cobb Municipal Association, is an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Sorority, Inc., The Legacy of Pearls Foundation, and various other community organizations. Melanie has sponsored scholarship opportunities for students to further their academic pursuits and she collaborated with another elected official with community non-profits to host community back-to-school drives. 

Melanie is not only a talented leader- but also a devoted mother who takes great pride in raising her daughter, Madison Elder. Melanie is an advocate of the ideology that learning starts at home, and she has instilled the importance of civic engagement with Madison early on.
