Flood Warning System

The City of Austell depends on the National Weather Service for flood notification. The National Weather Service will issue flood advisories prior to expected heavy rainfall that could cause flooding. The City has a citywide flood warning plan to provide early notification warning to neighborhoods that might experience flooding. Broadcast methods of emergency notification include the City of Austell website (www.austellga.gov), local television stations, and local radio stations. Additionally, the Austell Police Department may ride around using their car microphones to warn residents.

You can also sign up to receive CodeRED emergency notifications and severe weather warning alerts. To learn more, sign up below.

The City of Austell has instituted a rapid emergency notification service called CodeRED®. This system will distribute emergency messages by telephone to targeted areas or the entire City at a rate of 1,000 calls per minute. CodeRED® employs a one-of-a-kind Internet mapping capability for geographic targeting of calls, coupled with a high speed telephone calling system capable of delivering customized pre-recorded emergency messages directly to homes and businesses, live individuals, and answering machines. By registering, you will be added to the emergency call list.

This service will be used in case of floods, fires, chemical spills, evacuations, lock downs, downed power lines, lost individuals, natural disasters, abductions, water system problems, bomb threats, or other emergencies. Calls can be geographically targeted for localized messaging. If widespread, the entire City could be called within less than 30 minutes. The system also reports who did not get a call so that they may be contacted by other means.

City of Austell residents are welcome and encouraged to enter their contact information for home, business, and mobile phones so they may be contacted by the system in the event of an emergency. It is important for city residents and business customers to register, especially if they use unlisted numbers, cell phones, or VOIP. Those who do not register their address and phone number may not be notified with CodeRED® in the case of an emergency. Registration is confidential, free, and easy.

You will need to register for each service separately. Clicking on the Severe Weather Warnings button will take you to the Cobb County sign up page. Once you have entered your registration information, our database will automatically be updated.

Flooding is a temporary overflow of water onto land that is normally dry. Floods are the most common natural disaster in the United States. Failing to evacuate flooded areas or entering flood waters can lead to injury or death.

Floods may:

  • Result from rain, snow, coastal storms, storm surges and overflows of dams and other water systems.
  • Develop slowly or quickly. Flash floods can come with no warning.
  • Cause outages, disrupt transportation, damage buildings and create landslides.

If you are under a flood warning:

  • Find safe shelter right away: The Austell Fire Department has designed Collar Community Center as shelter,  Address is2625 Joe Jerkins Blvd. Austell, Ga. 30106
  • Do not walk, swim or drive through flood waters. Turn Around, Don’t Drown!
  • Remember, just six inches of moving water can knock you down, and one foot of moving water can sweep your vehicle away.
  • Stay off bridges over fast-moving water.
  • Depending on the type of flooding:

  • Evacuate if told to do so.

  • Move to higher ground or a higher floor.

  • Stay where you are.
