Through a coordinated effort with the Cobb County-Marietta Water Authority and the Cobb County Water System, the Austell Water System serves approximately 3,300 customers. Approximately 63 percent of the systems users are within the city limits over a 19 mile network. Wastewater collection is also a function of the City within its water and sewer service area. Austell collects wastewater and feeds it into the County system to be processed at the South Cobb Water Treatment Plant.

The Cobb-County Marietta Water Authority, created by State legislature in 1951, is the regional wholesaler of water to various Governments and large private users within the County. The Authority draws from Lake Allatoona and the Chattahoochee River through two intake plants, with a combined capacity of 143 million gallons per day. The water Authority's system also includes eight storage tanks with a combined capacity of about 35 million gallons to equalize demand and to provide for fire protection and emergency use.

The Authority distributes water to retailers through a circumferential system encircling the County. Individual service area for both distribution and wastewater collection are determined by contractual agreements between the County water system and the six municipalities. The Austell water service area is bounded by Clay Road to the north, the Douglas County line to the south, Noses Creek to the west and Buttermilk Creek to the east.

The City installs and maintains water and wastewater lines along major streets. Within new developments, the developer is responsible for installation of the infrastructure and then turns ownership over to the City for maintenance.

In 2015, the average daily demand was approximately one million gallons per day for the City of Austell. On average, drinking water alone cost approximately $17.01 per household.
