Chief Shameta Jones-Harrell was born and raised in Huntsville, Alabama. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice with a concentration in Forensic Science from Jacksonville State University. Chief Harrell holds Intermediate and Advanced Certifications, as well as Supervision and Managerial Certifications, and has completed training in Law Enforcement Executive Development and Critical Incident Stress Management. She has served as a Peer Support Team Member. Chief Harrell is currently pursuing a Master’s in Public Administration at Columbus State University’s Command College.
Chief Harrell is an active member of the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police (GACP) and the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP).
Chief Harrell began her law enforcement career with the College Park Police Department in October 2000 as a Uniform Patrol Officer. She served on the SWAT Team, as a Field Training Officer, and as a Detective in the Criminal Investigations Division. Her leadership resulted in a promotion to Sergeant.
In 2013, Chief Harrell joined the Brookhaven Police Department as a Uniform Patrol Sergeant and contributed to establishing the new agency. She was later promoted to Lieutenant and then Major, overseeing Support Services, including the Community Engagement Unit.
Chief Harrell launched initiatives to strengthen community relationships, including the One Congregation One Precinct (OneCop) program, which fosters collaboration between law enforcement and the faith-based community. She managed the Training Division, Traffic Safety Unit, Property and Evidence, Fleet Operations, GCIC/Records, Accreditation, Hiring and Background Investigations, and special projects such as FLOCK camera technology.
As liaison to SJREC’s Police Accountability and Legitimacy Committee, Chief Harrell provided expertise on department standards, policies, and practices to ensure recommendations support equitable police services.
Today, Chief Shameta Jones-Harrell leads the Austell Police Department, transforming organizational culture and delivering high-quality, community-oriented police services.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Chief Harrell is a devoted mother to two handsome sons, balancing her demanding career with her role as an active and loving parent.
